Awareness Raising on Climate Change, Food Security and Disaster Risk Reduction

Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Sustainable Development (CD_RIMS)

Sierra Leone ranks 42nd in the 2023 World Risk Index, indicating significant vulnerability to natural disasters and climate-related risks. The index assesses countries based on their exposure to natural hazards, societal vulnerability, and ability to cope with and adapt to disasters. This ranking places Sierra Leone among the countries at higher risk globally.

In a bid to address these multiple challenges as a country, CDRMSD was established.

CDRMSD is a community-based organization established in 2015 to enhance resilience and sustainability in disaster-prone communities. It focuses on disaster risk reduction, climate change/justice, food security, peace and conflict resolution, livelihoods and skills training, and raising awareness about public health emergencies. CDRMSD works with marginalized and disaster-prone communities, particularly those vulnerable to climate change, food insecurity, and conflict. Through educational programs, training sessions, and community mobilization, CDRMSD builds local capacity for disaster preparedness, resilience, and climate adaptation. The organization aims to reduce poverty, promote peace, and improving the overall quality of life for those most in need, ensuring sustainable development for all. CDRMSD collaborates with local and international partners, including governmental agencies, NGOs, civil society organizations, academic institutions, and community groups, to amplify its impact and support joint efforts in addressing complex challenges related to disaster risk management, climate change, and sustainable development.

Our mission seeks to identify and manage risks that may destroy development efforts to which vulnerable communities are exposed and develop an efficient and collective approach to address them
